FAS EURES Services for Migrants

FÁS International Employment Services (IES) is part of EURES - European Employment Services Network established by the European Commission to assist the free movement of workers between the EU/ EEA countries.

FÁS/EURES have the dual responsibility of both attracting workers from abroad to satisfy the labour market demand which still exists and of promoting available worthwhile work opportunities in the EU/EEA to Irish or Non-Irish workers. It is responsible for preparing mobile workers interested in coming to Ireland or workers from Ireland who wish to take up opportunities in other Member States of the EU/EEA. It does this by ensuring workers have up to date information on living and working conditions of Ireland and all Member States of the EU/EEA. Specially trained staff, EURES Advisers, of which FÁS have 18, give advice and counselling to mobile workers on their decision to work abroad.

The main areas of responsibility are Placement, Advice and Counselling to Irish or Irish based job seekers who wish to work in the Member States of the EU/EEA and to provide an international recruitment service to Irish and European employers.

This has resulted in involvement in the following areas of work:

‘Know Before You Go’ campaign aimed at preparing European job seekers, interested in working in Ireland, before they leave home.
It consists of a suite of DVDs, information brochures and posters which give practical information and advice about living and working in Ireland. ‘Know Before You Go’ information is currently available in 16 languages on FÁS website and available in all FÁS Employment Offices.

Language Line - simultaneous interpretation service.
IES provides a simultaneous interpretation service in all FÁS Employment Services offices which allows non-English speaking workers to communicate with FÁS staff.

EURES ‘Open Days’ at regional level for migrants living in Ireland.
These ‘Open Days’ give information on a wide range of issues including information on job opportunities, employment rights, accommodation, health and welfare etc. In addition EURES Advisers from European countries give advice to migrant workers interested in returning home.

EURES Recruitment Events/ International Jobs Fairs at the National level.
IES/ EURES organises International Jobs Fairs depending on the Irish labour market situation e.g. in 2008 IES hold 3 International Construction Jobs Fair in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.
EURES Recruitment Projects.
FÁS/ EURES organises Recruitment events in European countries to satisfy the needs of Irish labour market. The fairs are organised on behalf of Irish employers who have difficulties finding suitable candidates in Ireland.

DIALOG Project.
This new initiative is aimed to provide a platform for identifying the labour market issues of EU/ EEA workers in Ireland. The purpose is to develop a greater understanding of the issues facing migrant workers in Ireland, to develop solutions and to help them with integration. DIALOG is based on co-operation between the varying Organisations providing services to Non-Irish workers in Ireland.
