UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD)An Inter-Departmental Committee established in 2010 to prepare for Ireland’s examination before the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD) in early 2011 continued to meet. The examination was held in Geneva in February 2011 and was attended by a delegation headed by Mr Diarmuid Cole, Assistant Secretary, Office of the Minister for Integration (now the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration).
Universal Periodic Review of Human RightsTwo staff from the Office participated in the Secretariat established to prepare for Ireland's first examination under the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights on 6 October 2011 and prepared much of the briefing material used. Issues relating to migrants and migrant integration were raised at the series of 7 regional consultation meetings held before Ireland's report to the UN Human Rights Committee was finalised. The consultation meetings were chaired by Mr. Diarmuid Cole, head of the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration. The issues were also discussed at the Interdepartmental Group set up to prepare for Ireland's appearance before the Human Rights Committee
Annual Tripartite Meeting on Resettlement 2011The Office, along with representatives of two receiving communities (Monaghan and Carlow), was represented at the Annual Tripartite meeting on Resettlement in Geneva in July 2011.
Stakeholders Meeting on the resettlement of refugeesThis meeting was held in Brussels on 6 October, 2011. The primary focus of the meeting was on how to effectively engage with local actors to ensure that resettled refugees can be integrated into society at the local level. Staff from the resettlement team made a presentation at the invitation of the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) and the Federal Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (Fedasil).
UNHCR Working Group on ResettlementA UNHCR Working Group on Resettlement was held from 10 to 12 October 2011 in Geneva. A member of the resettlement team presented on issues arising that impact on the resettlement and integration of caseloads with specific challenges e.g. persons with intellectual difficulties, older teenagers, women at risk.
