Garda Charter

Victim Impact Statement

If an offence comes to trial and the result is a "Guilty" verdict, the victim of certain crimes (sexual offences, violent crime, or any case where the judge thinks it appropriate) can make a Victim Impact Statement to the court to help the judge decide on the right sentence, taking in to account the damage done by the crime.

An Garda Sochna, in partnership with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Victims of Crime Office, have developed Guidelines entitled ‘Making a Victim Impact Statement’ to help victims of crime to draw up their statements.

These guidelines are available on the Garda Sochna website in 12 languages. You can find the link to each language version below.
