Ministerial Council on Integration - Announcement

02/06/2010

    Press Release
Minister Mary White T.D., Minister of State for Equality, Integration and Human Rights today announced that she has commenced the process to establish a Ministerial Council on Integration. The Minister explained that expressions of interest from migrants are now being sought for appointment to the Council and the closing date is 7th July.

Minister White said, “I plan to set up four regional forums so that I can engage directly with migrants and listen to their issues, hopes and challenges. I place great emphasis on the importance of civil society engagement and I want to work closely with our immigrant communities to ensure effective integration."

The Minister continued, “This Council is open to individual migrants so you don't have to be a member of a NGO or a group to apply. I want to reach out to migrants and hear the experiences and views of people who come from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds and countries of origin."

Council meetings will be chaired by the Minister and will normally be held two to three times a year in each of the four regions i.e. in Dublin, Rest of Leinster, Munster and Connacht/Ulster. Each regional forum will be composed of 15 to 20 members and members will attend meetings in the region in which they reside. The Minister explained, “I believe that by setting up the Council in a regional formation, it will ensure that the experiences of integration at a local level will be reflected and considered."

Expressions of interest for appointment to the Ministerial Council are now being sought from persons from the migrant community who are legally resident in Ireland for two or more years, or who have acquired Irish citizenship. Applicants for asylum or subsidiary protection will not be eligible to apply. Intending applicants should forward a Curriculum Vitae (stating country of origin also) and a covering letter outlining their background and the reasons they consider themselves suitable for appointment to the Ministerial Council to the Office of the Minister for Integration.

Minister White commented, “As the Minister responsible for integration issues, I look forward to working closely with members of our immigrant communities and I would encourage migrants to apply for appointment to the Council. It is an opportunity for individuals to have a voice in relation to their integration experiences and to help shape a better and more cohesive Ireland. I would particularly urge women from the immigrant communities to apply as I would like the Council to have a gender balance."

Mhínigh an tAire go bhfuiltear ag iarraidh léirithe spéise ó imircigh anois le haghaidh ceapacháin chuig an gComhairle agus is é 7ú Iúil an dáta deiridh.

Dúirt an tAire White, “Tá sé ar intinn agam ceithre fhóram réigiúnacha a chur ar bun ionas gur féidir liom bheith ag plé go díreach le himircigh agus éisteacht lena gcuid ceisteanna, a gcuid dóchas agus a gcuid dúshlán. Cuirim béim mhór ar an tábhacht a bhaineann le rannpháirtíocht sa tsochaí shibhialta agus is mian liom a bheith ag obair go dlúth lenár bpobail inimirceacha chun comhtháthú éifeachtach a chinntiú.”

Lean an tAire uirthi, “Tá an Chomhairle seo ar oscailt d’imircigh aonair, mar sin ní gá duit a bheith i do bhall d’ENR nó de ghrúpa le cur isteach air. Ba mhaith liom lámh a shíneadh amach chuig imircigh agus taithí agus tuairimí daoine a chloisteáil a thagann ó réimse leathan cúlraí cultúrtha agus reiligiúnacha agus tíortha tionscnaimh.”

Beidh cruinnithe den Chomhairle faoi chathaoirleacht an Aire agus eagrófar iad de ghnáth dhá uair nó trí huaire in aghaidh na bliana i ngach ceann de na ceithre réigiún .i. i mBaile Átha Cliath, an chuid eile de Laighin, Mumhan agus Connacht/Uladh. Beidh gach fóram réigiúnach comhdhéanta de 15-20 ball agus freastalóidh na baill ar chruinnithe sa réigiún ina bhfuil cónaí orthu. Mhínigh an tAire, “Creidim, má bhunaítear an Chomhairle i bhfoirmiú réigiúnach, go gcinnteoidh sé go léireofar agus go ndéanfar cíoradh ar an taithí ar chomhtháthú ag leibhéal áitiúil.”

Tá léirithe spéise maidir le ceapachán chuig an gComhairle Aireachta á lorg anois ó dhaoine ón bpobal imirceach a bhfuil cónaí orthu go dleathach in Éirinn ar feadh dhá bhliain nó níos mó, nó a bhfuil saoránacht Éireannach acu. Ní bheidh iarratasóirí ar thearmann nó ar chosaint choimhdeach i dteideal iarratas a dhéanamh. Ba chóir do dhaoine a bhfuil sé ar intinn acu iarratas a chur isteach, Curriculum Vitae (ag sonrú na tíre tionscnaimh freisin) a chur ar aghaidh chuig Oifig an Aire um Chomhtháthú mar aon le litir chlúdaigh ag cur síos ar a gcúlra agus na fáthanna a measann siad go bhfuil siad oiriúnach le bheith ceaptha chuig an gComhairle Aireachta.

Dúirt an tAire White, “Mar an tAire atá freagrach as saincheisteanna faoi chomhtháthú, tá mé ag tnúth le bheith ag obair go dlúth le baill dár bpobail inimirceacha agus ba mhaith liom imircigh a spreagadh chun iarratas a dhéanamh ar cheapachán chuig an gComhairle. Deis atá ann do dhaoine aonair guth a bheith acu i ndáil lena gcuid taithí ar chomhtháthú agus cabhrú le hÉirinn níos fearr agus níos comhtháite a mhúnlú. Mholfainn go háirithe do mhná ó na pobail inimirceacha cur isteach air, mar ba mhaith liom go mbeadh cothromaíocht inscne ar an gComhairle.”
